The Role of the Therapist

  • The Garden Studio, 6 St Luke's Road, London W11 1DP UK (map)

When does compassion get in the way?

When we encounter a client who really touches us it can be so difficult to sit back without offering advice or opinions.  In our work as therapists it is our job to help our clients take responsibility for themselves.  We don’t offer our clients a quick fix or an instant cure, but more importantly a chance to gain a greater understanding of themselves from a different perspective; an opportunity to see where they have come from, and where they might go from here. Being too invested and involved with our client’s stories, however, can mean that they don’t get the chance to emerge as an adult. Often, all that is required is a belief on the part of both that change may emerge from their particular connection.  Healing is not to be rushed or hurried and relief of physical symptoms is not necessarily the only outcome; coming to terms with, and accepting responsibility for, our health and ourselves is as important.
